In the Hamptons, with summer rentals usually ending right after Labor Day, the holiday weekend is always a frenetic scene of club hopping – from the beach clubs like Neptune’s & Dockers to the trendy hot spots like South Pointe and Sole East in the evening hours. The scene is marked by a desperate sense of squeezing the most out of the last days for group shareholders and summer renters. This year we decided to skip the crazed night life circuit and partake in more traditional Hamptons activities – long dinners with lively conversation, languorous sails around Gardiners Island and Shelter Island and low key family celebrations.
We jump-started the weekend with the Artists Dinner at Georgica Restaurant where rock band Mean Machine was to play. The weekly event spearheaded by mortgage broker Judy McDowell and her husband Michael McDowell whose vibrantly colored paintings are a cross between Gauguin and David Hockney always attracts an eclectic mix of artists, actors, writers, filmmakers and other creative types. Despite a young waiter who was somewhat overwhelmed – first course arrived almost 2 hours after we were seated – it was a delightful evening with such folks as the amazingly creative landscape designer Linda Ardigo, filmmaker Robert Pappas who is revolutionizing the way in which America’ looks at growing old and our favorite couple Gary Andreassen and wife actress Katherine Andreassen who has been featured all summer in the hit TV series “Royal Pains”.
On Saturday, we high tailed it over to Sag Harbor where our pal producer and special events guru Scott Perrin sailed down from Mystic, Connecticut to pick us up in his 36 foot sloop, the Francis Scott Key for a leisurely six hour sail to Orient Point, cruise around Gardiner and Shelter islands and back to Sag. Sipping champagne aboard the fast moving vessel were songwriter and musical theater composer Melissa Levis with her husband real estate honcho Ben Singer and their fearless 7 year old son Monte, fashion designer Andrea Caprio, society and entertainment PR whiz John Wegorzewski and “Host with the Most” Bismark Irving of The Rainbow Room, Russian Tea Room and Tavern on the Green fame.

Post Hurricane Irene, Southampton Village snapped back to normal very quickly and we had our usual post-church brunch at the popular Fellingham’s where Millie Fellingham presides like a doting mother hen to regulars and visitors alike. Later that evening it was over to North Captain’s Neck for a wonderful family birthday celebration for Gary Andreassen hosted by his wife beautiful Katherine and equally gorgeous daughters Alexandra and Elizabeth.
Labor Day may be the end of summer for the post grad crowd but not for folks on the East End. This weekend there are a number of wonderful activities that will keep Hamptonites both weekenders and locals busy.
The Late Summer Cocktail Party hosted by the Southampton Historical Museum at the fabled Rogers Mansion is always one of the season’s best gatherings featuring copious hors d'oeuvres and drinks to celebrate the end of the summer season and support The Museum's Education Programs. The community fete takes place at the Rogers Mansion, 17 Meeting House Lane, Southampton Village from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Fee: $40 in Advance, $50 at the Door. Call 631-283-2494 for tix.
Over in the whaling village of Sag Harbor the annual Harbor Fest will roll all weekend long with Dory and whale boat races, chowder and clam shucking contests, there's music and games too! It’s a great family outing for this annual celebration of Sag Harbor history.
