Remember that scene in the amazing Park Chan-wook revenge thriller “Oldboy” where the protagonist Oh-Daesu ate a live octopus? That’s apparently a Korean delicacy. In Japan, they prefer to take a squid, cut off its head, and serve it on a bed of rice. The catch? It dances.
Known as “odoi-don,” or in English “dancing squid rice bowl,” this popular Japanese dish is nothing more than a variation on squid sashimi. When prepared alive, it’s known as ikizukuri. While popular in Asia, it’s banned in Australia.
So if it’s dead, how does it dance? When soy sauce is poured on it, neurons in the body fire, resulting in a twitching motion. Rest assured, the squid is dead, but make sure you you don’t look in its eyes before you eat it. It’s just too sad.
The dish is traditionally served with the squid on a bed of rice, and the head cut into sashimi slices. I’ll stick with pizza. At least it doesn’t stare at me when I eat it.
