Kaity TongTonight watching WPIX News at 10, they once again had Kaity Tong in the anchor seat. This is where she belongs. A while back, they changed the whole format of the show, sending Kaity out to do reporting from some restaurant in Brooklyn. It was a very sad move indeed. New Yorkers trust the anchors they have watched for years and Kaity is one of the best.
After speaking to some of my friends at WPIX, I was told that there was a new news manager and he was responsible for the change. They also said the ratings were up, so they assumed the move was a good one. The reason the ratings are up is quite simple. The new format is good indeed, but so many people are un-employed, that they do not have to go to bed early anymore. They can stay up and watch the news. This is also true with daytime television. People are not working, so they are home watching TV. The ratings are up a huge amount in daytime television. Plain and simple. The new format at WPIX may have brought in new viewers, but the main surge is because no one is working and they now have time to watch TV.
Kaity Tong is a legend and a Icon in New York City. She is a trusted reporter and a trusted anchor. When a disaster happens, the viewing public wants to hear it from someone they trust and Kaity Tong is that person. I am not putting down the other anchors, they do their job well, but they are not Kaity. Kaity flows with the other news people in the show, she has such a good relationship with Mr. G, Marvin Scott and all the old time professionals. I just can not understand why WPIX management would put on the shelf such talented people.
This seems to be the trend everywhere these days. replace the old with the young and this has got to stop. I do not know if Kaity was just filling in tonight or management finally got their heads screwed on right, but Kaity belongs in the anchor seat. Send the young crowd to Romper Room. As another WPIX old timer Lionel would say, comment as you see fit!
