Both Tamils and Singalese are our people. They migrated to Lanka about 2-3 thousand years back. Now the fighting is for stamping authority to rule one over the other.
2000 years back most of the south India speaks Tamil/Dravidian language. Malayalam is a new language made from Sanskrit and Tamil.

This whole idea of linking GC to probable purchasing homes..is insane!

The 700Bn or whatever the final number is not entirely a drain.....
the thing with all these exotic securities is not that they are completely worthless but that there is no market for these right now and hence are illiquid - so if someone had the ability to keep these securities for a long term (say 30 years - since most mortgages are for 30 years) on their balance sheet - they may not lose as much money as they would if they tried to liquidate these investments in the short term.
Financial Institutions typically borrow short term to invest in long term investments and keep renewing the short term borrowings - since the underlying investment has become illiquid - it has become difficult to raise financing against it. the govt, howver, can take a long term view and be patient....who knows.....in the end - the Govt may actually come out with positive cash flow at the end of all this mess. So, the bail-out plan may not be as bad an idea as media is portraying it to be.........in short-term - it does take US into further indebtedness.
I already have a GC - so this debate does not impact me personally - but this is against the basic principals of natural justice.......GC applicants were placed into certain EB categories based on job descriptions and qualifications and then within queues assigned priority dates based on certain logic and are currently being approved based on PD and country quotas..........all these rules were known and published prior to companies and people applying for these GCs.....
No matter what the incremental benefit is, I think its blatantly unfair (like it was blatantly unfair to push some people to labor backlog centers and approving people with later PDs first) to change the rules of engagement and prioritization midway through the process and give preference to someone based on an ability to invest certain $$s in an house.......buying a house is a commercial and lifestyle decision........should not be a precursor to a USCIS adjudication.......

Nope. UK and Pakistan would then join the club of India & China. ROW is an artificial construct. The reason USCIS posts priority dates for India, China, Mexico and Philippines separately is that applicants from these countries are typically, and especially over subscribed. ROW countries are just countries which are not typically over subscribed in the EB category.

Immigration lawyers raised unusually irate protests yesterday after the State Department and the immigration service abruptly withdrew tens of thousands of job-based visas they had offered last month to foreign professionals hoping to become permanent residents in the United States.

To apply, immigrants must undergo medical examinations and assemble documents to prove their job skills and show that a United States employer has sponsored them. Foreigners must be in the United States when they present their applications, which are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Because of backlogs for employment-based visas, foreigners have had to wait many years just to be allowed to file their applications.
Thousands of medical and technology professionals, including many working here on temporary visas, scrambled for weeks to get their documents together, in some cases canceling travel plans, in order to file their applications on Monday, the first day of the window. The State Department and the immigration agency closed the window without accepting a single application.

And I believe that those must be countered point to point...
You see... our target membership audience consists of very intelligent people..They come to this site and read UnitedNations arguments...If they accept those arguments ... what would be the net result.???...They would just go away....It gets directly in the way of our efforts.....

I have a lot of postings on immigration.com and I can tell you definitively that the conversations on this portal are much more constructive and educated. On the other portal there are people who still think it is a conspiracy of holding back visas and government wants people out. No matter how much one talks about the law and visa allocations they do not look at the facts but rather wallow in self misery and conspiracy theories.
There are others who don't pay much attention to immigration matters and belive the rhetoric that a law change is around the corner and it will increase the vsias by a substantial amount. In my opinion from everything I know; regarding allocation of visas; number of pending cases at backlog centers; number of perm approvals; number of people here on h-1b; O visas, L-1' university H-1b's; the wait could be minimum ten years for people from severely retrogressed countries. Until people can understand this; and I am afriad that the only way people will understand this is if USCIS/DOS issued exact statistics of how many I-140's there are where 485's haven't been filed; how many 485's are pending which can't be approved; how quickly they process eb2 row and eb3 row cases and how frequently they come into the pipeline then an educated guess cannot be made with any great precision. However, everything I know would say that everyone from india in eb3 and eb2 should just stop watching the visa bulletin because at the current pace and law; it would take five years to just approve one year of greencards which happened in 2005 and even then the dates were back to 2002. Since January 2005 there hasn't been any eb3 approvals from India with priority dates after June 2002. You can just imagine how big the numbers are. There was over 50,000 H-1b visas issued in 2005 (can't tell which were intial h-1b's or just revalidation); 20,000 H-4's; 20,000 L-1's, 20,000 f-1s; 200,000 visitor visas. That was all just in one year. When there is only going to be 10,800 greencards compared to these numbers it becomes mind boggling.
Regarding arguments and counter arguments. When one does a presentation or getting ready for a presentation you always need to understand the other side of the argument. If you don't then you cannot counter it and will lose credibility. So some of the things I have pointed out need to be countered/mitigated to have any reasonable chance of success. For example the 485 filing without priority date; how many people knew that a person on visitor visa could file a 485; people from family base who are illegally here would be able to flip over to EB and come into this stream; people on L-1; f-1, etc. The numbers would be so huge that without quota change, etc. it would be a disaster. If the plan was to first ask for this and then six months later say; hey look now we have 2 million people going for greencard and you should increase the quota now; it might fall on deaf ears for many years.
Just in case you want to ask; I don't have good answers; there will be much more arguments to use about not attracting/retaining once all of EB retrogresses. The scientists; executives on L-1 from companies like Citibank; hsbc, etc also get retrogressed then you will hear much more noise.
Within immigration there is competing interests. You have political asylee issue where there was a cap of 10,000 annually even though there are hundreds of thousands of people waiting for it. It took them many, many years to lift the cap. there are 12 million undocumented workers who could pose a security risk if you listen to all the security pundits; there are EB3 skilled workers who cannot get into the country because they don't quality for h-1 and have to wait outside; there are teenagers; young adults who came with their undocumented parents who are trying to legalize, etc. Phillipinos who are sponsoring their siblings have to wait for 23 years.
In EB we are one of the few who hold non immigrant visas that allow us to get a greencard while we are in USA. Just about all the other categories of non immigrant visas require a person to stay out of usa until they get the greencard. As I said in a previous posting; I firmly believe that EB is the least disadvantaged of the various routes to get permanent residency.

Also I would like to ask the posters here who say that SL tamils are discrimanated, can you please post the things that a SL Tamil is NOT allowed to do in Sri Lanka that a Sinhalese is allowed. I am curious to know what they are. :D

SNathan, I know you are supporting MMS and not congress. But remember, it is not MMS govt it is congress govt. MMS is just an executive who will implement his boss's decisions. It happened during Narasimha Rao. It was Rao and not MMS who brought economy reforms. Also, India Shining was flop show and we had to wear sun glasses, but last 5 years of UPA was such a economic disaster that now even if we remove glasses we can see nothing but darkness.
Also please consider that during UPA rule, India's loss due to terrorism was next to Iraq. As Narendra Modi says, even if you are rich, own houses and cars and happy in life...but if you are not sure that at the end of day you will return home safely or not, then this money and richness is of no use.

Once a child turns 21 he/she can no longer be filed with the primary applicant. However, once the I485 is filed with USCIS the child is regarded as "safe" regardless of how long the USCIS takes to adjudicate the I485.
I have that very situation. My son turn 21 in mid-January 2008.
This is a HUGE issue if it is true. Can we verify it preferably with a URL?

The point of the thread is that many people now think that cost of american dream is greater than the opportunity, and the balance is tilting in favor of other countries. Everyone makes their own assessment. No point in getting personal about it. Just a suggestion..using phrases like "suck blood out your body" will just reduce the effect of your argument.
And Do you (canadian wanna be) have any clue that to get respected salary and position you will be forced by illiterate Canadians to have "Professional Engineering Certificates"... It will suck blood out of your body for 5 years... So just do not read "Greener Side" of Canadian Immigration... I know it may not be applicable to all but more or less most of will have to face the same music in their careers. My all Canadian friends and relatives want to be Americans.. Only some of them practically could proceed for that.. After some stage of life it becomes hard to move families.. That is the reason they are facing now to take decision and simultaneously do not want to live in Canada anymore.. If you have 101 fever it will take 1 month to have Doctor's appointment... GST.. Higher taxes.. statistically there are chances "Most of members of this forum - Canadian Wanna Be" will have less promotions and/or increments in salary eventhough they will find themselves most skilled wherever they will work. Top posts would be the dream for most of you guys unless you start your own business.. if you understand what I am trying to tell... In USA it is not that way.... Your assumption does not hold good for this year. As someone else already pointed out USCIS processed 80 to 85% of year 2008 quoto already, it would have only 15 to 20K visa till october08. For next year, if still the horizontal overflow happens it would add more numbers.
Nowhere i have seen in EB2 it goes beyond 50K except 2005(but there was AC21 implemented to recapture unused visa on 2005(Overall issued visa were 246,877.)
EB-2 India would go back to some date in October 2008,but to what date is anybody's guess.Lack of data about EB2 India for 2003,2004 is preventing us from forecasting this.
My guess for EB-2(I) for 2005 2006-MID JUNE EB2(I) is about 8000 from Perm Data.
I assume it would move back to 2004 ARP or MID 2005 to start with in 2008 November.

For first quarter EB2 India will have 1/4 of 9,800(7% of 140k visas), which are 2,450 visas. I wonder
how u got 800 visas. I dont see much retrogression in EB2 dates other than some mild ones. And the dates move pretty fast on a whole.
About EB3: it wont be like now all the time. The Immigration reform bill wont keep failing all the time. There would be a time for it to pass in the next two years. As soon as it passes all our Employment Based categories, specifically EB3, will get greatest benefit with PDs almost becoming current.
Nowhere i have seen in EB2 it goes beyond 50K except 2005(but there was AC21 implemented to recapture unused visa on 2005(Overall issued visa were 246,877.)
EB-2 India would go back to some date in October 2008,but to what date is anybody's guess.Lack of data about EB2 India for 2003,2004 is preventing us from forecasting this.
My guess for EB-2(I) for 2005 2006-MID JUNE EB2(I) is about 8000 from Perm Data.
I assume it would move back to 2004 ARP or MID 2005 to start with in 2008 November.

Calm down everyone.
The thread was posted in a seperate area we have created for such posts. As Marphad said, you cannot discuss immigration all day. IV is a platform for everyone in the community to be together. If you just talk about immigration, we may not get the number of people we need for action items. When we start action items to make calls, send faxes etc, we want people sending it in thousands and not hundreds. It hurt us last year when we had such action items and participation was thin. If we make the forums strictly to discuss immigration it will hurt us in time of need when we will desperately need massive participation. This is part of a plan in moving forward for IV and we are building a platform for immigrants to come and stay here and consider it as their home. This work is still under process and you will see its fruits when we have a big bill like CIR. There is a possibility of CIR after August and we need to be ready for it. We are hearing health care reform coming before CIR at this time. There is pressure from CHC and it will be tough to ignore.
So do not get emotional and start fighting. It is tme to be united and increase the membership of our community. We will need to burn the phone lines and jam the fax machines with our participation when the time comes.
I have deleted my post on this thread. As an administrator I represent IV and I will keep in mind not to air my personal views on politics as they can be misinterpreted as IV's views.

And who told you that they are being opressed - have you been to Sri Lanka and if yes which places did you visit to see the Tamils being opressed .
The terrorists who come to fight in J&K from Pak say they are fighting because Indian Army and govt is opressing the Muslims . Is that true also ?
Seriously I don't care - my personal opinion that in this particular case it is none of our ( India's ) business to meddle in Sri Lankan affairs when they are on the verge of getting rid of a menace they have . Terrorism is not a solution of anything . Only peaceful times can bring happiness and prosperity.
I did not travel to SL but had one my classmate from SL. He is an SL Tamilian and joined me in my school. His parents were taken for interogation and they never returned. Father was killed during interogation and mother died in between the clash. He was bundled in the truck by his neighbor and shifter to India. I dont believe that SL Tamils are treated equally. I really hope that there would be an end to their sufferings. It is unfair to make an incorrect statement. Their own Army Chief Pon Sekara made a open statement that the SL Tamils has to live like a secondary citizens. When thousands of innocent people are dying and trying to justifying is equal to committing the murder.
The blunder LTTE did is assassinating Rajiv Gandhi. But again Indira Gandhi was assasinated. Even the SL PM Rajapakse assassinated the editor who has written a column about the civilians sufferings.
I accept that terrorism is not the solution. It is easy to tell that way from a safe place and hidden from the truth.

The logic is that you are 'putting down roots' by buying a house. If all it takes is proof of closing a mortgage, one could always turn around and sell the house. somethng like that would undermine the credibility of IV in the medium/long run.
I had initially advocated treating first time home buying as the same as marriage to an American citizen. In my opinion, that is a short,sweet,simple and sensible approach to follow that will also resonate/stick in lawmakers minds (rather than a long,rambling letter, no offense meant to the writers, it was quite well put together).

Every country has its warts. (Mine has them too) but the immigrants to a country are what give it life.
For the Doctors, check out some rural areas various provinces. I think they have programs that ease the regulatory burden.
