Facebook Tightens Security On Photo Tagging

Currently, people’s friends can add their names to dodgy pictures without their consent or knowledge. Tags can be removed later but only after many others – such as bosses or relatives – may have seen the embarrassing shots.
Now, in a shake-up of security settings announced last night, users will be able to insist on pre-approving whether their name is attached to a photo.

Although they are still helpless to stop friends adding pictures, not having their name tagged can make it harder for people to find potentially embarrassing images.

Facebook said last night the change was in response to user requests.

Pre-approving photo tags had been the most requested change, said Kate O’Neill, product manager for the website.

The pre-approval option will also apply to written posts that tag other users. Ms O’Neill said: ‘We are making it easier for people to share what they want, every time they post.’
The changes will come into force today. Facebook has been trying to simplify its privacy settings.

From now on, privacy controls will be on users’ profile pages, next to the information they share, such as music they like or the schools they went to.
Previously, most of these controls were located several clicks away on an ‘account settings’ page.

The social networking site is also making a feature called ‘view profile as’ more prominent.
It lets you type in the name of another Facebook user and see how your profile looks to them. For example, if you hide your photos and favourite music from some Facebook friends, this content won’t show up if you view your profile as one of them.
