Meade takes a unique approach to her portraits by making her models a part of the artwork, as well as its subject.
She turns their bodies into living and breathing canvases, brushing paint directly on to them. Her props and surroundings are liberally coated with acrylic paint to make them part of the experience.
When photographed together, the model appears to become one with its surroundings, as though they are a two-dimensional part of the canvas.
The effect is so striking that some people find it hard to believe the photograph is not a conventional paint-on-canvas work.
Meade, 24, works at the Irvine Contemporary gallery in Washington DC but has never attended art college or taken advanced painting lessons.
She classifies herself as an artist working at ‘the intersection of painting, photography, performance and installation’.
She said: ‘I paint the surfaces of the human subjects, the material objects and the architecture of the installations so as to collapse the subject, foreground and background into one continuous plane.’
Meade believes that ‘experiences cannot always be interpreted at face value, seeing is not necessarily believing’.
