On October 25, 2008, with days to go before the election, McCain campaign staffers accused Palin of deliberately running the McCain-Palin ticket into the ground.
One unidentified advisor complained to CNN: "She is playing for her own future and sees herself as the next leader of the party. She Sabotaged The McCain Campaign Palin laughed off the claims, even using a derogatory reference from the article — "going rogue" — as the title for her smash-hit autobiography.
Troppergate
Did Palin fire a man because he refused to fire Palin's ex-brother-in-law? Walt Monegan accused Palin of having forced his resignation over his refusal to fire State Trooper Mike Wooten during Wooten's custody battle with Palin's sister. (If Wooten was unemployed during the divorce case, it could have given Palin's sister an advantage in court.)A unanimously-elected bipartisan committee in the State Legislature found Palin "abused her power as governor [in] attempting to get Trooper Wooten fired." An ethics panel, however, cleared her of any specific ethics violations and she was never charged with any crime. Palin apologized for her role in the incident, calling it "a distraction" for the state...
Was Bristol's Show Rigged?
USA Today reported that a "conspiracy theory" floated around the set of the reality show Dancing with the Stars during Bristol's nearly-triumphant run during the competition. Jezebel claims that "Conservatives are cheating the 'DWTS' System..." However, the only rigging was apparently unsubstantiated reports of Palin fans voting for her daughter without having seen the show — or voting for her less-than-stellar performance even if they had seen it.
Why She Really Quit
Palin's July 2009 speech announcing her resignation as Governor of Alaska was heavily derided in the media. Slate published a response entitled "Lost in Translation: Why Sarah Palin Really Quit Us" that "Palin's political skill lies in selling a persona but not a message. And in the end, this may explain why she quit..." Palin fans claim a baseless Democratic conspiracy to undermine her, coupled with relentless attacks from the media, caused her to feel her family and sanity were better protected out of the limelight, but it's possible that Palin failed to see a route to bigger things while stuck in Alaska.
Breast Implants
The humorous political site Wonkette asked if Sarah Palin had bought herself new funbags after very complimentary new photos of Palin hit the presses in July 2010...
But Palin told Fox News that the allegations were unfounded and a plastic surgeon blogged that Palin was mostly wearing a padded bra.
Did Palin Really Give Birth To Trig?
The mother of all modern conspiracy theories, this is one not necessarily divided into those who believe (Dems) and those who don't believe(GOP'ers) Palin faked giving birth to Trig to cover for her daughter's out-of-wedlock pregnancy. Palin claims her water broke on an April night in Texas but she flew back to Alaska to give birth 20 hours later to a baby she knew had Down syndrome As of 2011, no convincing photo has surfaced to prove Palin was indeed pregnant until roughly five days before the birth, but that could have been faked. An AP reporter claims to have seen Palin with a pregnant belly, and her doctor says the rumors are foolish.Despite claiming to have publicly released the baby's birth certificate, no record of her doing so exists — and unlike the Obama birth certificate story, she actually hasn't proven when, where and to whom Trig Palin was born.
The Bristol-Levi Wedding
In 2008, left-wing bloggers accused Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston of a "sham engagement" designed to appease Christian conservative voters who were upset that Bristol was pregnant. When the two lovebirds split after the election, these same bloggers boasted that they had been right however, Bristol and Levi got back together and reportedly became engaged a second time around in 2010. What did it mean when they split yet one more time in August of that year?
Todd Palin's Alleged Affairs
A January 2011 National Enquirer story claimed that Palin and husband Todd were on the outs over her belief that Todd had visited a "female massage therapist who was [later] busted for prostitution. The Palin Family decided not to dignify the report with a response, but the Anchorage Police Department weighed in on the issue of whether or not Todd Palin was involved in the investigation, telling the Daily News: "There's not one scintilla of evidence that Todd Palin had anything to do with this."
Did Palin Want To Ban Books?
Although most disputed email political chain letters in 2008 furthered unfounded rumors about her opponent, Sarah Palin was actually the victim of one email hoax that year. An anonymous sender listed books Palin had tried to "ban" in Wasilla public libraries, suggesting that she was on a witch hunt against free speech.A McCain campaign spokesperson denied there was any such list and said that Palin had merely asked a librarian how controversial titles had been addressed in the past. In any case, Mayor Palin took no action to ban any books during her tenure.
Did Fox News Hire Her To Help With 2012?
Republicans and Democrats alike were concerned when Palin was hired as a Fox News contributor in 2010. GOP'ers predicted it could prop her up to win the nomination in 2012, something many of them thought spelled disaster for their general election chances. Liberals thought it would give Palin a podium from which to build her candidacy in the off-season.Did Fox News hire her deliberately to help her win... or to keep her out of the race? No one has ever directly put the question to Palin or a Fox spokesperson, but that hasn't stopped the rumor mill from spinning. -By Brian Fairbanks.
