Successful Trial Of World's Fastest Broadband At 1.5Gbps

Virgin Media has successfully trialled what it claims is the ‘world’s fastest cable broadband’ at 1.5Gbps.

A three month trial of the 1.5Gbps broadband at the London-based Techhub, also known as the Silicon roundabout, has been successful.

At 1.5Gbps, the broadband service offered is 240 times faster than UK's average.

The 1.5Gbps download and 150Mbps upload trial uses the same infrastructure and technology as that which Virgin Media uses to provide residential customers with speeds of up to 100Mbps, which is currently being rolled out to 6.5 million UK homes.

UK Communications Minister Ed Vaizey was impressed by the achievement. He said: ‘It is fantastic to see the fastest internet speeds in the world over cable being trialled here in the UK.’

Virgin Media executive director of broadband Jon James said: ‘As people are simultaneously connecting more gadgets to the internet and doing more online than ever before, we wanted to explore what our unique fibre optic network is capable of.

‘At speeds of up to 1.5Gb, Virgin Media is delivering some of the fastest broadband in the world and, thanks to our ongoing investment, we're able to anticipate and lead the way in meeting growing demand for bandwidth as future services and applications come online.’
