Convicts Are Caught While Breaking Back Into Prison

Inmates at Sudbury Open Prison in Derbyshire were caught trying to get back in – after sneaking out to visit their girlfriends and family.
Christopher Price and Brett Frewin, scaled a 1.8m (6ft) wall out of Sudbury Open Prison in Derbyshire and travelled to Birmingham for the day.

They attempted to climb back in the same way but were spotted by a prison officer. In a panic, they went on the run for five days, holing themselves up in a hotel before handing themselves in to prison authorities.

The pair pleaded guilty at Derby crown court to escaping prison. Frewin, 27, was sentenced to four months’ jail and 24-year-old Price three months.

At the time of the escape, Frewin had only seven weeks left to serve of a ten-year sentence for manslaughter, said Chris Watson, prosecuting.

Price was half way through a five-and-a-half year sentence for an armed raid on a shop.

‘One of the reasons they escaped was because they were fed up with being in prison,’ said Mr Watson.

He added that Frewin had had an argument with his girlfriend and wanted to see her, while Price wanted to see his baby daughter on Father’s Day.

Judge Ebraham Mooncey said their escape was not sophisticated. ‘There is no suggestion that people regularly go over the fence and come back. It is not a method that is regularly used at an open prison,’ he said.
