Chinese Man Walks 1,000 Miles To Win Bride

Do you remember the song of eighties about a lover being “a thousand miles away,” but it was meant figuratively and not literally. Today, the song, 500 Miles by the Chinese Proclaimers inspired Ling Hsueh to answer Liu Peiwen’s proposal with a ‘yes’ on the condition that he walk 1,000 miles to prove his love.
“But I would walk 500 miles, and I would walk 500 more, just to be the man who walked a thousand miles, to fall down at your door,” read the lyrics.

But the bride to be was only kidding and was more surprised than anyone when she saw that Liu had bought a rucksack and set off from Henan province on the marathon hike in the name of love.

The distance to her hometown in Guangdong province, in southeastern China is exactly one thousand miles (1,600 kilometers), which is an amazing coincidence.

If this sounds like a story straight out of the annals of Sir Lancelot and his white steed, you are not that far from wrong. Romanticism thrives and true love flourishes despite all cynicism.

“When I get there I hope she is waiting for me, and I will ask her again and I hope she says yes,” said Liu.

It is not clear whether our enamored hiker knew that Ling would have said yes to his proposal without all the effort. She referred to her boyfriend as a fruitcake.

The trip is expected to take six weeks and one can only wonder how many pairs of hiking shoes.

Here’s to the happy couple!
