Navagio Beach – A corner of paradise

One of the most popular and exclusive beaches in Greece. Located on the island of Zakynthos, the third largest of the Ionian islands, Navagio beach (also known as the Shipwreck or the Smugglers Cove) seems rather a glimpse of paradise, isolated from the rest of the world, which only the privileged have the chance to enjoy. The beach is accessible only by boat, but that does not stop thousands of tourists to venture on this hidden corner of the world to enjoy even a few minutes with the incredible image of the huge rocks, the fine sand beaches and transparent blue water of the sea.

Another attraction of the beach, along with the dream image provided by nature, is the Scottish Shipwreck Panagiotis, failed on shore in 1980. Nobody knows exactly how did this ship get on the beach, although legends occurred rather quickly. Built in Scotland in 1937, the ship changed its name several times over the years, ending up as Panagiotis, the famous ship of cigarette smugglers and the Italian mafia. Some argue that the ship failed during a chase with the Greek Coast Guard vessels, crew later disappearing without a trace. Another version of the story says the ship was sunk near the shore by the same Coast Guard, waves then throwing it on shore. Last and perhaps less romantic story says that the Greek Minister of Tourism of the 80′s ordered the wreck to be planted especially on the beach to attract more tourists.

Regardless of the legends woven around it, the Shipwreck beach is considered even today a veritable wonder of nature, perhaps the most beautiful beach in Greece, on the island which was once conquered and ruled by the mythological hero Odysseus himself. Perhaps here on this so beautiful place, walked the wisest of the heroes who fought in the Trojan War.
