About Movie:
This is the story of a young African American teenager, Alike (Adepero Oduye) who is a lesbian. She is happy and confident in herself to be open about it. The problem is that not everyone finds it as easy to live with as her. The topic of her sexual peference causes extra tension in her family home, which is already suffering due to marriage problems between her mother and father. Alike is a good student and well liked, her best friend understands her problems as she is also a lesbian and helps Alike when faced with any problems. Feeling happy in herself, Alike now feels it’s the right time to have a girlfriend. Adepero Oduyehas worked on many TV shows and films. She should get a strong word-of-mouth push and face good prospects beyond the fest circuit.
The debut feature from Dee Rees (whose short-film take on this story won fest awards a couple of years ago), Pariah centers on Alike, a lesbian teen who leaves plenty of hints but balks at explicitly telling her church-going parents she likes girls. Pressed by her mother into making the acquaintance of a colleague’s daughter, Bina (Aasha Davis), Alike finds Bina to be unexpectedly refreshing to socialize with. Wondering how much she can confide in her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity – sometimes succeeding, sometimes not, but always moving forward
